Tonight I Dined: The Tomato Head

The Tomato Head in Knoxville, TN has two locations and I stopped by the one in Market Square downtown. The menu is very vegan friendly and labels the vegetarian and vegan items clearly. The interior and outdoor patio are lively with friendly waitstaff, which makes it a great spot to hit up in the evening, enjoy some beers on draught, and people watch. Pro-Tip: Most of the parking garages are free at night, so go enjoy yourself on a budget!

I ordered the Vegan sandwich which was presented on a lovely herbed bun with sundried tomato pesto, sprouts, carrots, red onion, spinach, tomato, and tofu. It was delicious...the highlight was the creamy pesto and soft, flavorful bun. I must say that while tasty, the way the tofu was prepared was strange. It was cut into small triangles and this shape made them fall out of the sandwich really easily (i.e. you need a fork or some clean hands). For ease of eating the damn thing, I'd much prefer a big slab of tofu like this burger (see below) from Field of Greens in Houston. The sandwich came with a side of a chips and a pickle, and it's a really good vegan option in a town that doesn't necessarily cater to plant-based clientele.

For dessert they have giant vegan cookies that look soft and chewy and cupcakes with icing piled impossibly high. These baked goods (strategically on display as you walk into the restaurant) looked absolutely delicious, and I regret not ordering one!

Tofu burger for comparison. Easy to eat.
