Tonight I Dined: Sunflower Cafe

Sunflower Cafe is a very veggie-friendly restaurant in southern Alabama with 2 locations. Of course I tried them both.

In Fairhope, AL the cafe is located in a strip mall directly next door to Virginia's Health Food Store. The ambiance is on the nicer side, with dimmer lighting. The menu features mostly vegetarian food that is veganizable or vegan food (however there is a few meat dishes). Everything is clearly labelled (hooray!). I ordered the Lemongrass Stir Fry which came with tofu, yellow bell pepper, water chestnuts in brown rice. The vegetables were crunchy like I like it, and the sauce was lemony but light. Absolutely scrumptious! They have vegan desserts, so ask your server if you're feeling extra.

Pro Tip: Sunflower is only open for lunch. although the menu online says they serve dinner 5-9 pm Thursday and Friday, I went and they didn't appear to be open.

In Mobile, the cafe is located inside of Virginia's Health Food Store. The menu is the same as the other location. This location is bright and airy with some of the kitchen exposed. It's got a little bit of the health food store musk--ya know that mix of dried goods, burlap and incense? Doesn't bother me, I like it!

I ordered the soup of the day, a vegan red bell pepper and artichoke soup as well as the Thai Peanut Salad. The soup was 10/10 delicious. I love a creamy, hearty soup and this one had it all. The salad was pretty plain with the highlight being the glass noodles on top.The peanut dressing was delicious but it was way too thick, almost as viscous as peanut butter itself. The soup and salad combo was so tasty, but with a $10 price tag I still left hungry. After a quick trip to an archaeology museum I found myself eating Whole Foods hot bar just about an hour and a half after eating lunch. That was my fault for ordering what I did, I'm sure I would have been satisfied with one of their wraps (I'm looking at you jerk tofu wrap with pineapple sauce)!
