Tonight I Dined: El Papi

Very lucky for me I heard rumors of a vegan menu at a Mexican restaurant a block away from the brewery I was visiting in downtown Mobile, AL. I couldn't find this vegan menu online, so it was a bit risky, but when I arrived at El Papi they pulled out the elusive separate vegetarian and vegan menu (I snapped a pic below). The restaurant is very nice, with the front room having a fancier vibe, although it was still family-friendly. If you want something more casual, you can sit out on the patio or in the bar.

While it was a hard decision because everything looked so good, I ordered 2 tacos de calabacitas with chips and salsa as an appetizer. The tortillas were grilled and chewy, freshly house-made. The filling was veggie heaven with chopped squash, peppers, onions topped with fresh cilantro and a salsa verde. Now even though I live in the land of Tex-Mex there isn't an abundance of vegan tacos, but these Alabama tacos stood up to some of the best I've had. It was smoky, spicy and a little tart from the salsa. Totally amazing, and messy like it should be! The chips and salsa were equally delicious, and I recommend this place to any and all vegans stopping in Mobile!
