Tonight I Dined: Milky Way Shakes

I've been dreaming of vegan shakes since VegNews published this article back in September announcing the arrival of Milky Way Shakes, Austin's first vegan milkshake truck. I made the trip to Austin for this plant-based culinary pilgrimage.

The Milky Way Shakes food trailer is located at Spider House Cafe near UT's campus in central Ausitn. There are other trucks located out in the parking lot (both vegan too: Cool Beans Eatery, and Arlo's), but this is in the backyard. Milky Way has 6 flavors and a Build-Your-Own option with a chocolate or vanilla ice cream base. I ordered The Golden Ticket: vanilla ice cream with swirls of fresh pineapple compote and bourbon caramel, topped with glitter-ized dried pineapple, toasted coconut and edible gold stars. This shake was almost too pretty to eat...the picture does not do the sparkly topping justice. The taste was absolutely incredible with a hint of booziness, richness from the caramel and delightful sweet and tart notes from the pineapple. This was the best vegan shake I've ever had, no competition.

My bf ordered the Buzz Aldrin featuring a coffee kick and crunchy hazelnut toffee. I tasted it and it was phenomenal. The predominant flavor was the toffee, and that was alright by me. This shake was creamy and sweet and had a nice depth of flavor. Next time I'm ordering the strawberry lemon curd with housemade aquafaba meringues because that sounds amazing!
